Yesterday, a condominium attorney called to ask how certain leasing restriction language would impact an FHA condo project approval.
During the conversation, it dawned on me that this is the perfect career for me. I get to do so many various aspects of business but not to the point where I would grow bored with any one of them.
I enjoy law even though reading some legal documents can be very cumbersome. I am adept enough at it to interpret what is being said. I have read so many condominium declarations that I have a decent understanding of the condo laws in CT.
However, I don’t deal with condominium law all day, every day. I don’t have to put up with the frivolous litigation matters. I get a smattering of it so it’s enjoyable.
I have an affinity for numbers and spreadsheets so reviewing the financial statements of condominiums is also kind of fun for me. I know what FHA is looking for so I am able to help associations produce the statements in a format that is to FHA’s liking. I might not look forward to it if I had to do it day-in and day-out.
I am always learning something so it never becomes boring. FHA periodically updates and clarifies its guidelines and project reviewers request new or different documents for the approvals. I am learning condominium laws in different states. It’s all very fascinating to me.
Some form of sales has been my career for the past 15 years. That is the part of my career that I really enjoy. I hadn’t previously been able to devote much time to this because I was always bogged down in processing. Meeting new people, developing relationships and the challenge of educating folks about FHA loans and condo approvals is a lot of fun and keeps me on my toes.
I am self-employed which I LOVE. I have been self-employed or have had the ability to set my own schedule for the past 15 years. During that time, I have missed VERY few events with my boys and my Joyce. It also gives me the flexibility to work from home if I feel like working in my underwear.
The most exciting aspect to me is that I am building something out of nothing. Maybe it comes from building with Legos as a kid but I really enjoy creating and developing things, whether it is a business or a flower bed. The finished product is great, but building it is exhilarating.
I had always heard that when I found a career that I enjoyed, it wouldn’t feel like work. This message is typically conveyed by success trainers and wealthy folks so I always thought “Of course you love your career! I would love a career that made me wealthy too!”
Now I get it. They didn’t love their career because they were wealthy; they were wealthy because they loved their career. And now I am able to understand what they meant! I look forward to getting up in the morning and often spend my "free time" working and planning. This is definitely the perfect career for me.
